Mary Ann’s Mexican Restaurant Review: Portchester, NY
My go to Mexican restaurant in Greenwich is Boxcar Cantina, but I was shocked and very sad to find them closed on this particular Saturday evening. Perhaps the family goes out of town and shuts it down for a week or so during the summer? But my craving for Mexican food would not go away, so I decided to try out Mary Ann’s Mexican Restaurant in Portchester, NY. Upon entering Mary Anne’s I thought the decor and ambiance was decent, but it has nothing on the New Mexican feel of Boxcar.
Next test, the tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa is fresh and tasty. The chips were decent too. However, again, neither holds a candle to the amazing salsa at Boxcar Cantina (which is perhaps my favorite salsa of all time). My husband kept telling me to stop comparing Boxcar to Mary Ann’s, because Boxcar is really not Mexican food – it is New Mexico’s cuisine.

My husband ordered Karen’s Quesadilla (a spicy chile rubbed flour tortilla stuffed with grilled chicken, roasted eggplant, scallions and jack cheese… and served with black bean corn salad and green rice) and we both thought it was very tasty. In fact, it is decent competition for the quesadilla I’ve had at Boxcar Cantina… haha but I’ll stop comparing the two.

I made a worse choice, but felt like being vegetarian for the night. I ordered the Bean & Cheese Burrito (a flour tortilla stuffed with fresh salsa, lettuce, your choice of black or pinto beans & jack cheese. Topped with red sauce and melted cheddar cheese. Served with rice and beans.). It sounds good, right? Well I strongly believe that with a can of Rosarita refried beans, a bottle of enchilada sauce, some cheese and tortilla shells from the grocery, I could have made something just as good, if not better, for about half the price.

My final verdict is that Mary Ann’s is not bad, and I’d definitely come back here again… if Boxcar Cantina is closed! An interesting thing to note is that sometimes Mary Ann’s has a live mariachi band, so that could be a cute addition to your dining experience.
